On the other hand, Fixon and Gene Richards Jr are back home, a duo that has managed to fit perfectly into their joint productions. A percussive version of Untrodden Path, with a dirty texture designed to tear up any dance floor.

"Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug.

Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world.

Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism.

In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug). Beginning proceedings with ‘Three Fires’, the EP cuts straight to the point, force-feeding the listener into a commanding and hard-hitting aural experience. Bangers from around the globe. Dar Disku launched with a question: how to channel heritage into dance floor elation? Well, when your name translates to 'home of the disco,' the brief feels pretty self-explanatory.

In the first few years, that meant crafting edits of Khaliji hi-NRG and Bollywood soundtracks to fit contemporary 'crates. They took off as DJs through a run of radio and parties in the UK—where they currently reside—flexing deep finds from across the SWANA region. Their vibrant debut album, out in September on Soundway, furthers the mission.

True to form, their RA Podcast is stuffed with heaters from all over the map: Algeria, India, Chile, Jordan, Australia, Turkey, Libya and Morocco get a look-in, as well as a few staple acts that betray the kind of high-wattage European festivals the duo increasingly frequent. Veyl is pleased to welcome Velvet May for his debut LP on the label. 'Enchanted By The Muse' marks a new and exciting direction for the Italian-born, Berlin-based artist whose aesthetic focuses on post-punk, techno and industrial music. This album embodies May’s exploration and experimentation of various musical directions, reflecting a fusion of industrial, rock and electronic elements. It also symbolizes a new approach, spanning genres and styles and exploring his sound from every angle.

Conceptually, the album reflects a realm of emotional dissonance in an industrial desolation - where harsh electronic textures mingle with gritty industrial and rock elements. Also present are echoes of punk's raw energy and adrenalinic drive, a musical journey through shifting moods and atmospheres, serving as a soundtrack to different aspects of life and capturing the essence of its high and lows.

From the opening track, 'Now That You Have Left It All', we are lured into a thrilling sonic dimension with a shot of energy that sets the stage for journey ahead. 'Keep On Falling' injects a dose of rock which we find throughout the record fused with the artist’s signature blend of post-punk, industrial and techno strains. Tracks like 'The Outsider' and 'Slithering Serenade' conjure raw, distorted rhythms and a menacing fuzz which bleeds out of the speakers while 'Scales of Gold' traverses back through infectious body and wave. 'Illusion In Control' is the perfect climax, a musical assault that shatters boundaries and blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.

"We used to roll up socks in our shoes to give us an extra inch." The childhood friends talk about coming of age in Belfast and their label and event series, CHROMA.

Bicep—the Irish duo Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar—have been winning over the hearts of fans with trance-inflected, melancholic dance music since 2009. In this interview with RA editor Gabriel Szatan, the childhood friends talk about how they got where they are, unpacking their creative process and the abiding musical influence of their hometown, Belfast, a city where emotional trance reigned supreme.

They also discuss their ongoing multidisciplinary project, CHROMA—a record label, event series and evolving live audiovisual show. Ferguson and McBriar say that the idea for CHROMA came from a sense that their DJ sets were becoming too "sugary," so they buckled down with a renewed focus on creating dynamic new productions made specifically for the dance floor and their sets. Returning to SHDW’s Mutual Rytm imprint following 2023’s successful ‘Coral Knife’ EP, he unveils a fresh selection of cuts that emphasise his emergence with ‘Delta Hyve’.

Londoner Josey Rebelle is 'just' a DJ. She doesn't make records, she plays them, but she plays them like no one else. Her impeccable taste and ability to join the dots between disparate genres in the club, on the radio and with the compilations she puts out has won her countless awards. She is known for drawing on her Caribbean roots as much as she is for the passion she pays with and the authenticity of her selections. Whether old or new, jungle or soul, a Josey Rebelle set is a thing of joy.

And she proves that for us this week with an almost two-hour mix that traverses a dizzying amount of terrain. It's a club-focussed trip that fizzes with apocalyptic energy before taking off into worlds of cosmic techno, twitchy club music and supple jungle. The drama comes as much from the mixing as the tunes but one thing is for sure, there is no real way of knowing whether you're listening to sounds from the past, present or future.
The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track from NFNR. "Sprotyv (Resistance)" comes off the new EP, Fragility, out on Berlin's WAAGE Records. Kyiv based, electronic musician Olesia Onykiienko creates emotional dreamy electronica with a strong core, balancing sound between fragility and finding inner strength via rich saturated textures.

NFNR was searching for themes that can go deeper than personal anger, hatred and despair caused by the Russian invasion into Ukraine where she continues living, and found a solution in talking about fragility, vulnerability, tenderness and her feelings to the dear ones - the most precious thing in life. The EP features 4 original tracks that are both powerful and vulnerable.

Wormhole techno from a DJ you need to know. KYRUH is a high-impact specialist forced in the crucible of modern NYC's notable spaces, including WIRE, Dweller and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Their sound is that of a DJ skilled at pressure without requiring shortcuts through obvious terrain, adept at hammering it without defaulting to speed alone.

After years burning a hole through the American underground, 2024 is proving to be a tipping point. KYRUH's appearance on Kelela remix compilation RAVE:N in spring lit the touchpaper for a run of gritty productions and increasingly prominent slots across North America and Europe.

Konduku (@kondukukonduku) is Dutch-born but with a proud Turkish heritage that colours the music he makes. It's impactful techno but with curious time signatures and minimalist percussive that draws on the rhythms of his ancestral homeland. As the son of a musician and Balkan folklore dancer, he was always set to spend his life in music and so far it's been a rich one that has included a standout debut album on Nous’klaer in 2018 and fresh EPs on the cult likes of Delsin, Bitta and Spazio Disponibile.

This week's mix showcases exactly what he is all about with 80 minutes of supple and subversive techno. Liquid tracks from Jeff Mills, Donato Dozzy, Shackleton and plenty of his own all feature in this timeless trip where slick transitions and carefully threaded grooves constantly build mood and atmosphere. From deep and cosmic to dark and dystopian, there is an always underlying tension that keeps both mind and body utterly locked in.

The 7th Frenzy chapter is upon us and we are delighted to present a long-running project with no other than UK mastermind Hurdslenk. Years ago he took part in the Frenzy contest - having us hopelessly falling in love with his driving trademark sound. Growing up in the 00s techno era, he subtly blends old-school elements with a contemporary vision in an unrivalled way, resulting in releases on labels such as Freddy K’s KEY. We’re proud to finally see ‘Twenty Cycles’ EP delivered, a 6-track EP including two remixes by UK-born and raised Bailey Ibbs and Frenzy co-founder Isaiah.

‘Pull Effect’ opens the realm of the A-side and pays respect to its name. You’re drawn into a scenery of deep kicks, drums, and mental vocals. Followed by ‘Mayhem’, a deep and pensive groover that slowly builds up to an echo chamber of dark pads and gentle dub accents. Bailey Ibbs kicks in the door with a remix on the verge of the industrial and the forceful. The B-side embarks on a ride into the past with ‘Warriors’, where compressed dub patterns and a haunting speech set the stage for a mind-altering body workout. Before you know it, ‘Onem’ kicks in with a tension release and sweaty groove while Isaiah flips the coin on this track and transforms it into an uplifting bouncy bass workout.

It’s time to move -‘Twenty Cycles’ EP takes you on a journey into the deep.

My World My Way was the name of @e-saggila's album back in 2019. It perfectly encapsulates her brazen approach to sound which chews up and spits out everything from noise to breakcore to techno. The Iraq-born, Toronto-based artist has always revelled in the contrast between tempos, shocking rhythms and distorted textures. Part of the thrill of listening to it is the sense it could all collapse at any moment, whether releasing on her label Summer Isle or the likes of Opal Tapes, Hospital Productions, and Northern Electronics.

This week she delivers an hour of pure electronic potency that brings to life her uniquely dystopian visions. Staring in what sounds like a haunted underground metro station, she then transitions into futuristic worlds of pulsating bass, squealing synths, scratchy melodies and hyper-driven percussive patterns that race along into the unknown. It's an abstract selection of sound that is cerebral and cinematic but will also cause utter carnage in a club setting.

Regent is an ever-growing voice in the global techno conversation. Versatile but always designed for maximum impact, delivering an impressively crafted sound made for powerful systems, this new outing offers a wealth of different moods and grooves for various parts of the night. Returning to SHDW’s Mutual Rytm imprint following 2023’s successful ‘Coral Knife’ EP, he unveils a fresh selection of cuts that emphasise his emergence with ‘Delta Hyve’.

The title cut ‘Delta Hyve’ opens up with devastating low ends and busy synths that scurry about the mix to bring dynamism to the rooted drums, while ‘Ophaal’ delivers thumping kicks and coarse, textured hits scrape and scratch, while supersized hi-hats bring the intensity to all new levels. ‘Hygea Core’ brings the pressure with hunched-over drum patterns and a sense of urgency in the bass, while creepy pads create an unsettling atmosphere. ‘New Narrative’ powers on like a train with high-speed rhythms and metallic percussive surfaces, all sweeping you off your feet, before ‘Ree 54’ switches things up with bright synth flashes and more extraverted grooves that hark back to the machine soul of early Detroit techno.

The first digital bonus, ‘Presence’, is intense and tinged with the grit of a warehouse and menacing vocals, while ‘Rheplica’ delivers unrelenting loopy drum funk with shattered glass melodies to close the show.

Belgium pioneer Steve Redhead is the founder of Reda Recordings and has spent his life immersed in techno. His potent take on the genre has appeared on labels like MB Elektronics, Zync, and Primate and has helped define the sound of the underground within his home country over the last 25 years. Returning to SHDW's Mutual Rytm imprint following his well-received 'Eastbook Isle' EP last year, he's back to impress again as he uncovers six new productions with his latest EP, 'Cosmic Alchemy'.

He shows his class from the off here with opener 'Sincfala', bringing the heat with banging drums and rusty percussive loops. Yelping vocals add raved-up intensity, while 'Rapidshare' is energetic and loopy with funky drum patterns and loose-limbed percussive madness. The fantastic 'Ad Valvas' is another straight-up linear banger with tightly woven drums, percussion and lithe synth lines that take you to the heart of the dance floor and 'Nusakan' is a muscular wall of drums and toms with urgent synth stabs powering it forwards with great intensity. 'Asmodeus' brings a more zoned-out feel with soulful pads and subtle vocals layered over the elastic drums and bass, before digital bonus 'Voice Incident' delivers another perfectly textural techno workout with melancholic motifs and surging synths that bring warm rushes of emotion to the grooves.

Pure energy from one of electronic music's brightest lights: Sofia Kourtesis. Clamour had built around the Peruvian artist's poignant brand of house music following a string of EPs and 12"s, culminating in last year's Madres—a passionate, vulnerable and excellent album that resonated widely.

Madres packed in rare specificity for a dancefloor record, combining paeans to the power of sound with direct tributes to the neurosurgeon who saved the life of Kourtesis' mother. (Kourtesis even took him clubbing in Berlin as an additional thank you.) The album's earworm melodies and approachable aura helped launch Kourtesis from bubbling to breakthrough on the global stage. In both sound and impact, it mirrors another record: Swim, the 2010 classic made by Kourtesis' friend and mentor, Dan Snaith.

Speaking of @caribouband: RA.943 kicks off with a brand new Sofia Kourtesis & Daphni collaboration, before powering through summer-ready cuts from LUXE, Floating Points, IceMorph, DJ ADHD and an old Oliver Lieb classic. An exercise in control of auditory limitations and possibilities, GAEL redefines techno production with their comprehension of cold atmospherics and meticulous world building. Exemplified in their first solo EP ‘Frozen White Horse’ released on BITE Records, fervent, hurtling drums are underpinned by hopeful euphorics and circulating, breathy cybernetics. A culmination of sophisticated sonic dialects reared from the intersections of soundscaping and electronic music, the berlin-based DJ/Producer from Dagestan (by-way-of Kyiv and Odesa) commits their practice to the inclusivity of borderless, capricious and emotive dance-floor synergy. This energy was previously captured on BITE last year with their appearances on the Shedding Skin VA and The Soft Moon’s Exister Remixed. GAEL’s harmonic and organic approach to techno production echoes the heartbeat of dancefloor resistance,captivating audiences across venues from Berlin’s Berghain to Kyiv’s ∄ as a resident at the queer event series XITb.

Delivering thunderous feeling through experimental sounds and masterful pacing, the 4-track-EP blurs the margins of moody techno exploration with remarkable attitude and a foreboding sense of uphill struggle. For the opening title track, a procession of stacked chords,synths and snares are met with a cyclone of galloping percussion building to maximum intensity until dispersing into echoey chimes. As the listener is able to catch their breath, the second track ‘prpttcxsstnc’ reignites - this time with trepidatious yet ethereal vibration, as the track continues to inject GAEL’s post-punk style of galvanised energy, rich layered drums maintain the undercurrent of resolute chaos into the following track ‘there is nothing left’. Sombre track titles are off-set by triumphant vigour for the third instalment, pushing through gale force drums and the clanging zaps and bleeps of electronic debris. Concluding with the final cacophony of collaged beats and drums, bellowing siren-like cold wails meld with GAEL’s calamity crescendo of crashing cymbals, the procession of rapturous drums slipping into a distant echo of warped hollow gleams.

Bogota-born, Berlin-based Tania Humeres Correa aka @thc_dj has perfected the art of high-energy sounds that get big room crowds close together. The Rinse FM host has her own party series La Noche with Byron Yeates and sibling DHC, and with the latter plays back-to-back as S-candalo. Acid, potent rave bangers, vocal gems and deeper delights all feature in her sets which always look to combine an unbridled sense of party with plenty of emotional nuance.

DJ Flight has been a constant throughout the many peaks and troughs of drum & bass. She's one of the genre's key chroniclers, with a real-time history of drum & bass in her archives as a radio presenter, and a level of behind the scenes involvement that spans decades.

While Flight's advocacy for equitable gender representation in drum & bass through her EQ50 collective is the most visible, it's by no means the sole initiative. Her work also extends to the Prison Radio Association—the only radio station made specifically for incarcerated people—as well as the Windrush Stories series, which focuses on the cultural history and contributions of Afro-Caribbean migrants to the UK.

Flight is also, plainly, a wicked DJ, who doesn't prefer one scene or subgenre over another—which also makes her a font of knowledge. (Her history of 2000s drum & bass is among the best genre deep dives we've ever published.) Raffaele Attanasio's Arenhell combines punchy beats with deep dark, ominous synths, dynamic percussion and robust bassline. Carla Schmitt brings a refreshing vibe to the French techno movement. Her music is both groovy and melodic accompanied by a dark and sensual energy. Driving her emotions into her productions has been a key component to her success. A self-taught artist, she writes and is also a choreographer with her music has been released on Exhale, Voxnox, Gomboc Records and Dusk Records. The French born DJ, producer, and choreographer Carla Schmitt will inaugurate the newly announced Gears imprint with a spellbinding 4-track EP, titled ‘Fragments’.

Launching with lead track ‘Black Hole’, Schmitt employs a thudding, heartbeat like drum groove at the track’s centre before adding a series of blitzing synth lines and reptilian like effects - the outcome being a fierce, driving techno melody fit for darkest of dancefloors.

May 2014, the first release on Amsterdam imprint Format appeared. It was Amsterdam techno figurehead Juan Sanchez under his JSSL guise. Since then, he pushed an enormous amount of local techno talent alongside an impressive list of icons such as Mike Parker, Matrixxman, Truncate and many more. Over the span of almost 30 releases Sanchez has created his own vibrant world of hard hitting, deep tripping techno and he plans on keep doing so.

For FR029 he invited rising techno star Lobster for a fresh collab EP. The Hague-based producer makes big moves representing Vault Sessions and his DJ appearances around the world. Here he joins Juan Sanchez for his Format label debut in the form of the Hybris Crux EP where both producers present their latest take on rolling techno including a rework of each other's tracks. It's a strong representation of what Format is about and how it keeps dancefloors moving with its excellent energetic style of pure techno.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Kris Baha. The Queer Australian/Italian-Armenian, multifaceted artist, Kristian Bahoudian aka Kris Baha, swapped the parched red earth and searing midday sun of the Australian landscape for the brutalist communist-era apartment blocks and slate-grey skies of former East Berlin. Kris is now a fixture in Berlin’s club scene and has toured most of the world as a DJ & live artist with his own unique production style of cyber industrial, EBM, wave, post punk, and early ‘90s IDM mutations. Remixing some of the scene’s most notable artists such as Boy Harsher and techno pop lord Boys Noize, Kris has garnered respect and trust in the electronic music scene for the last 13 years. To respond to the current AI revolution Kris uploaded himself to the cyber ether through his latest project: GHOSTS IN THE MACHIИE which was released on Fleisch Records in October of 2023. In April of 2024, Kris continued the cyber theme announcing 6 dancefloor ready body melter’s on Kindcrime Records, released on May 14th. Today we're thrilled to bring you this dynamic journey through the artist's multiple sound and genre mutations.

The first thing you might realise during a MUSCLECARS set is the sheer musicality of the duo's selections. Vocals glimmer at the centre, unfolding into enchanting, soulful coos, while drums strike captivating rhythms and gilded synths reach towards the sky. It's a jazzy New York house sound mythologised by pioneers like Joe Claussell, Carlos Sanchez and Timmy Regisford (whose songs all make it to this RA Podcast). For years, New York natives Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield have run their Coloring Lessons party as a way to introduce a younger generation to this vital piece of dance music history. In a city that prides itself on fast walking, fast talking and, as of late, fast BPMs, their music is an invitation to ease into a more relaxing pace.

This RA Podcast comes at a golden time for MUSCLECARS. In May, they released their RA-recommended debut album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea!, whose sultry (and undeniably catchy) lead single "Tonight" has gotten the stamp of approval, and a remix, from New York legend Louie Vega. And this Sunday, they hosted their annual Juneteenth block party outside the Lot Radio, where scores of Black dancers latched onto one another during sets from a multigenerational crew of Black DJs including Ron Trent, Lovie, Shawn Dub and MUSCLECARS themselves. This two-hour-plus mix takes us through the spiralling jazz of Herbie Hancock, the flashy disco of The Originals and lands us, finally, in "Water," the track that also closes out Sugar Honey Iced Tea!.
