Sound Metaphors (@sound-metaphors) is Nemo Ripoll and Castro Moore, but it is also the name of their famously well-curated label and record shop in Berlin. As such the pair has been helping to define the sound of the underground on many different fronts - electric DJ sets, cult events and even through the custom-made sound systems built for customers worldwide. With a vast musical knowledge between them and a never-ending supply of their own unreleased edits and DJ tools, they are able to tell musical stories that draw from all across all genres and many different eras.

That plays out in the superb mix they have put together for us this week. It's a full-bodied selection that shows off their love of contrasting styles - loose, percussive house music brushes up with deep and dubby cuts, dark acid grooves sit next to '80s synth sounds before a disco finish goes from stomping to funky. The exuberance of it all is infectious and leaves you wanting more.

Three sizzling hours from the mind behind one of the world's best labels, Kalahari Oyster Cult.

What you'll hear on this week's RA Podcast is the closing slot of 2024's Organik Festival—already a coveted moment. But as the sun dipped on Taiwan's north coast, something else was going on: Rey Colino was laying down quite possibly the set of his life.

We're big fans of Colino, AKA Colin Volvert, here at RA. Few do it better when it comes to the type of pacy, lysergic thumpers that have become synonymous with both Kalahari and the distro One Eye Witness. A quick glance over the Belgian label's impressive alumni confirms how deeply his work flows through contemporary clubs.

On RA.954, Volvert's sharp ear and swaggering DJ style are on full display. He locks in with many shades of his record bag, alongside a grip of new and forthcoming KOC cuts—some so fresh, the ink on the deal is barely even dry. Amidst the cold ruins of a bygone era, silence has now reigned for far too long. If the last sound to echo was the trumpets of the apocalypse, then the next will be the horn of genesis. Where once stood a jungle of concrete and steel, there now lies a horde of vaguely human-shaped carcasses.

They bear no heritage, born of chaos like snowdrops after a winter that has lingered too long. Everything is theirs to build, should they wish it, but they must first impose their values upon a world without borders.

And so, in this desert of ruins, humanity emerges as if from the Garden of Eden, new, devoid of love and hate, ready to write its destiny as it always has: in blood, sweat, and tears.

Lee Holman's performances as a live act and DJ have taken him to prestigious venues like TRESOR Berlin, Khidi Tbilisi, and Corsica Studios London. Known for his vast record collection and dynamic performances, Holman's productions have earned international acclaim.

The upcoming EP evolved organically, with three of the five tracks being part of Holman's live shows for NECHTO events. The lead track, "Wave upon Wave," was recorded live after an event in Kyiv, while the other two were from a session at Khidi Tbilisi. Holman initially did not plan to release these tracks, keeping his live performances unique for each night. The bonus track, "It's Not Over," features a beautiful vocal piece and soulful techno accompaniment.

Inspired by nature, particularly the sea surrounding his island home, Holman channels this inspiration into his music. The five tracks of 'NECH026' reflect his signature deep, raw, and energetic techno sound.

His productions have been central part of the scene through the 90s and the last decades. The UK legend spread the proper techno and electronic vibe with his solo moniker and in collaborations projects like Bandulu and Space DJz satisfying any kind of enthusiastic.

The EP starts with the ambient skit “Subteranium”, subtle synths and textures combined with a smooth-alternate basslines keep the listener moody and tense for an unexpected start.
In Temporal Mst open up the dances. Slightly distorted 4/4 beat track, jam-packed in No Signal style, plucked arps well arranged for an elegant swing.
Lore & Order is the match up to lead the dancefoors and listeners into more gloomy and wicked mood. Different sequenced synths wrap the drum groove for an hypnotic, yet enchanting and dreamy moving session.
The Tapestry of Fate is definitely a massive Jamie Bissmire’s signature track. Total ensemble of Ground Recordings releases, wicked patterns, dark mood and relentless pressure. Dancefloors will go mad for it.

Dame-Music founder Bloody Mary’s ‘ALTERNATE STATES OF REALITY’ EP marks the 50th release on a label that counts KiNK, Josh Wink, Boo Williams, Fear-E and Thomas P. Heckmann amongst its roster since it launched in 2010. The release sees Bloody Mary, Tresor resident, live artist, DJ and Producer, return to her own imprint with a full EP for the first time since 2020, produced as part of her live set ahead of her upcoming Autumn tour, and complete with a remix from Soma Records legends Slam.

In the ‘ALTERNATE STATES OF REALITY’ EP, Bloody Mary explores the varying aspects of her acid sound. Equipped with her TR-909 and 303, she shows her penchant for hardware, starting off with ‘REALITY ONE’, in which crunchy drums and crisp highs ride along a mind-melting acid polyrhythm before ‘REALITY TWO’ opts for a punchy electro beat, once again drenched in squelch and occasionally soothed by soft, nostalgic pads.

Flipping over the record, the infectious marching drums of Bloody Mary’s ‘REALITY THREE’ leaves behind the 303 and swaps it out for rampaging toms below a furious, clap-heavy topline. This party-starting track is pure rhythm, expertly remixed by Scotland’s Slam, who this time supply the acid in their version, amplifying the tempo to superb extremes for a hypnotic warehouse pumper and concluding the monumental fiftieth instalment on one of techno’s most important labels.

MCMLXXXV (@thetruemcmlxxxv) is a co-founder and resident at Berlin's celebrated queer party Herrensauna. Though it has gone from being a local underground favourite to a globe-travelling brand, it always remains true to its mission of empowering people though music and community. The soundtrack is hard and dark and comes from across the electro, techno, EBM and industrial spectrum but for every bit of grit, there is always a hint of seduction. MCMLXXXV was a real highlight when he closed down Dekmantel Festival '22 at the UFO stage with his fellow residents so we're delighted to welcome him back to the podcast series.

And he doesn't disappoint across a high-octane hour. The slick selections are in a rush to get you moving and once you start you won't be able to stop. The rhythms are elastic but bumping with earth-quaking bass down low and everything from tribal percussion to liquid synths via sleazy vocals up top. It's a perfect display of MCMLXXXV's ability to blend the physical with the sensual into colourful and contemporary soundtracks that really bang.

The Italian duo's reputation as a rave demolition crew has made them one of the most in-demand acts on the global circuit. Too nosebleed for 'business', and too close to Defqon.1-level hardstyle to be hard techno in the classic sense, 999999999's headline sets practically require a new category to convey the sense of scale: let's call it megatechno.

Following a string of unsubtle yet undeniably impactful hit records in the late 2010s, Carlo B. & Giovanni C. became fast favourites of a generation who prefer their 303 cranked to 11. Their rampant velocity arrived at the right moment, proving parallel compatibility with acid lifers and younger audiences making the leap from EDM to hard dance. Flash forward to 2024 and they're flanked by flamethrowers while mashing down colossal crowds at festivals like Awakenings.

Here, they purposefully strip it back and emphasise the core elements of the 9x9 formula—high drama, jackhammering kicks and the kind of tweaked-out acid air sirens that would make the likes of Hardfloor and Miss Djax scrunch their noses in approval. In other words, non-stop wrecking balls trained squarely at the foundations of a hangar near you.

A renowned global talent, Iceland's Exos was last on Mutual Rytm earlier this year with his successful 'Infrared' EP in April. The debut release on the label's new 10" vinyl X-Series, the EP picked up a wealth of high-profile plays while delivering an absorbing journey through techno soundscapes. The release was followed up by his 'Evil Nation'

LP, exploring a harder, more intense approach to techno on his own Planet X imprint, ext to tunes on the likes of Figure and X/OZ. However, he returns with more skilfully crafted ammunition across five stand-out productions and two digital bonus gems on SHDW's burgeoning imprint for a second outing packed with his trademark sound spanning mystic yet driving and impactful spheres.

The package opens up with 'Voices Of Volcano', a powerful track with a monstrous low end and quickened drum kicks that compel you to march in time as the twisted synths peel away up top. 'Enter The Danger' has a steamy feel, as if racing through a humid jungle with the sounds of bird calls and haunting voices next to the loopy percussion and driving rhythms.

The brilliant 'Icebreaker' keeps up the intensity with more precision drumming working dancers into a meditative state while the cosmic synths grow up out of the groove to become bright and unsettling. 'Mocoa Beats' is another warm techno cut that fizzes with synth energy and unfolds like an ancient ritual, while 'Chicat' brings some sensuality to the party with whispered, intimate vocals over more macho and unrelenting drums. Bonus tracks 'Codebreaker' and 'Spliffmatch' round out this high-grade EP of timeless techno in style, offering a unique closing treat for digital purchasers.

We've been angling for an RA Podcast from Two Shell ever since they shifted from lowkey producers into hijinx hackers rummaging around the dance music mainframe.

Now that we've bagged a mix from clubland's premier iconoclasts, it still poses more questions than it answers: Was this pre-recorded? What's the deal with that AI voice guiding the set along? How can we be sure it was even them? Hang on: is "even them" even them?

What we can tell you is that the duo floored RA's stage at Horst Arts & Music 2024. Few genres were left untarnished as they veered off-piste on a thrill seeking mission toward breaking the 170+ BPM speed barrier. No tracklist, so ID crew over to you (Alex Gaudino makes an appearance, you can have that one as a freebie.) True to form, Two Shell always do it their own way.

Athens-based artist Mr. Dello brings a love of industrial and dark techno to his sounds. He is a producer who is always experimenting with new ideas and creating a uniquely hard-hitting vibe on labels like Subsist, Wunderbock and Traum Schallplatten. This brand new EP sees him deliver two tracks inspired by his techno roots.

The title track kicks off this EP with heavyweight kicks that will rattle warehouse walls. They are hard and flat-footed while caustic synths wash about the mix and ghoulish voices add extra darkness and intensity. The equally powerful 'Kapioka' has filtered acid lines spraying about over rolling and earth-shattering kicks that will ensure peak-time dance floor eruption.

Remixer Voiski is a live performer and DJ and with Iranian roots and a love of classic electro as well as one of the seminal artist on the Sheik ’N’ Beik having released two ‘Spotlight Diktat’ and ‘Soundless Pattern of the Tortoise’s Walk’. He is involved with several collaborative projects including being one-half of Polar Inertia and has been hugely prolific on labels like Delsin and Bassiani. His take on 'Mazepsou' is lit up with bright, flashing synth motifs while the drums become broken and lumpy. It's a euphoric cut in the most devilish of ways.

The 2nd remix is from Simone Gatto who released Sheik ‘N’ Beik’s only full length LP album to date.He is at the helm of southern Italian techno label Out-Er. Also known for his ambient sound therapy work, his warm and hypnotic sounds gets dancers into a meditative state. His dub of 'Kapioka' lays down vast rubbery kicks and cavernous sub-bass while the deft synth modulations whip about and the whole track ebbs and flows like turbulent seas during a Mid-Atlantic storm.

A renowned global talent, Iceland's Exos was last on Mutual Rytm earlier this year with his successful 'Infrared' EP in April. The debut release on the label's new 10" vinyl X-Series, the EP picked up a wealth of high-profile plays while delivering an absorbing journey through techno soundscapes. The release was followed up by his 'Evil Nation'

LP, exploring a harder, more intense approach to techno on his own Planet X imprint, ext to tunes on the likes of Figure and X/OZ. However, he returns with more skilfully crafted ammunition across five stand-out productions and two digital bonus gems on SHDW's burgeoning imprint for a second outing packed with his trademark sound spanning mystic yet driving and impactful spheres.

The package opens up with 'Voices Of Volcano', a powerful track with a monstrous low end and quickened drum kicks that compel you to march in time as the twisted synths peel away up top. 'Enter The Danger' has a steamy feel, as if racing through a humid jungle with the sounds of bird calls and haunting voices next to the loopy percussion and driving rhythms.

The brilliant 'Icebreaker' keeps up the intensity with more precision drumming working dancers into a meditative state while the cosmic synths grow up out of the groove to become bright and unsettling. 'Mocoa Beats' is another warm techno cut that fizzes with synth energy and unfolds like an ancient ritual, while 'Chicat' brings some sensuality to the party with whispered, intimate vocals over more macho and unrelenting drums. Bonus tracks 'Codebreaker' and 'Spliffmatch' round out this high-grade EP of timeless techno in style, offering a unique closing treat for digital purchasers.

Occa is a DJ and promoter from the northernmost region of Japan, Hokkaido. Occa has been organizing his own party ARCHIV at the sacred club, Precious Hall for over 10 years. Musically he combines the spiritualism of Psychedelic Music, the storytelling nature of House Music, the sci-fi dystopian feel of Detroit Techno and the trance of Minimal Music in a three-dimensional way through his deft mixing. He has been invited to play at institutions such as DJ NOBU's Future Terror, Mindgames' The Labyrinth/Balance, Spekki Webu's Mirror Zone 5 Years Tour in EU, System Revival and Georgia's legendary Bassiani.

This mix is inspired by his Sci-Fi Shamanism set recorded at the Transcendence 2024 ceremony, held deep in the forests of Japan. Expect an absolutely mind altering journey of pounding tribal drums, haunted drones and ethereal melodies delicately sprinkled throughout. Quite the trip if we say so ourselves.

Following on from a diverse set of releases from chugging acid on the likes of I Love Acid and Balkan Vinyl, through to hammering techno on Paula Temple’s Noise Manifesto this EP follows the harder end of WTCHCRFT’s production skills and is rounded off with remixes from Valerie Ace and HAVEN boss Keepsakes.

The A1 kicks things off with ‘OOO’ - a full-speed-ahead 4-4 anthem with looping vocals, charging percussions and rolling kicks ready for the dance-floor. This is followed by the broken-beat rhythms of ‘The Kink’, where vocal hits and thunderous drums combine in another quick-fire club weapon. ‘VVV’ comes on the A3 with more marching drum rhythms and eerie vocal atmospheres before the A-side closes with ‘New Friends’ and its pounding kick drum and creepy film quotations.

The B-side launches with Valerie Ace’s remix of ‘New Friends’ - following on from their recent VA track on HAVEN last year the German producer reimagines the track in to a rolling techno slammer full of threatening atmosphere and disembodied vocal hits. Finally Keepsakes closes out the EP with his remix of ‘OOO’ where vocals, flute-like synth stabs, and acid lines play off each other in a call-and-response pattern alongside tribalistic drum rhythms to end another offering from HAVEN ready to light up dancers world-wide.

Ask Berlin's network of revered deep diggers who their favourite "DJ's DJ" is, and there's a strong chance you'll hear one name immediately pop up: KRN.

Phil Kearney, AKA KRN, is one of those rare types who has built a reputation away from the limelight. Formerly a resident at The Ghost's Hoppetosse party as well as a Get Perlonized devotee (plus, full disclosure, reviewing events and working at RA in the mid-2010s), he's well-versed in both wiggle and waft. The hubbub around KRN can be put down to the fastidiousness of his approach: he unearths rare gems from the roots of the underground, before mixing it up with a deft hand.

Kearney's RA Podcast, sweetly subtitled "Dadhouse," is an ode to his partner and newborn, as well as a window into his personal palette. He starts in serene IDM territory, before shifting into playful grooves and tactile house oddities. Since quantum mechanics arose from classical physics' failure to explain microscopic phenomena, Berlin’s exceptional creative mind Arthur Robert pays tribute to the interaction of little entities that can result in the release of colossal power and provide answers for questions older than the universe itself with his Particle Accelerator EP on The Third Room.

Genuine, dynamic techno that defines itself through crisp sound design, memorable textures, and highly compressed, sometimes distorted drum arrangements makes this piece of music a profoundly soundscaped lecture in four classes that gets its final, emotional touch from either melodic compositions or disruptive beeps. Drawing on the sinister themes of MK-Ultra, Remote Viewing, and the dissonance between body and mind, this EP unravels the horrors of a world where the mind is no longer safe. The heavy, pulsating beats of Electronic Body Music (EBM) and Techno Body Music (TBM) form the backbone of the album, driving a relentless rhythm that echoes the cold, mechanical heart of a simulated reality. Victor's (@victormgcpwr) superpower is his ability to adapt. He is a famously versatile selector who can impress a niche crowd at his Blitz Club residency in Munich, or light up cult festivals like Nachtdigital. The diversity of his solo sets is matched by his skill for finding common ground with other selectors, which is why he famously loves playing back-to-backs. From syncopated, break-riddled techno to ambient dub and everything in between, his selections are unified by their diversity. Victor also heads up his own Main Power label and this week plays Dekmantel Selectors in Croatia.

As a warm-up for that, he has put together a superb 75-minute mix that starts with one of his traditionally atmospheric and beatless openers before taking flight on lithe club rhythms. Genres are meaningless in his hands as the German transitions between deft percussive workouts, swinging drums and dubbed-out soundscapes that are always on the move, never easy to predict, but completely absorbing for both mind and body.

A glorious ode to sound system culture. For her RA Podcast, Brooklyn-based DJ Ayanna Heaven celebrates vibrations echoing down the ages, connecting seven decades of trailblazers and trendsetters. It's a soundtrack we've timed with an eye to that golden late summer run of Notting Hill Carnival, Brooklyn's West Indian Day Parade and several crucial dates in the Jamaican calendar.

Since 2020, the Brooklyn-based DJ, ethnomusicologist, dancehall advocate and promoter has held down two shows on the city's most popular stations: the monthly "Sounds of Heaven" on The Lot and biweekly "Across 110th Street" on WKCR. That's roughly 72 hours of radio every year. Light work for Heaven, though, whose sound traverses the limitlessly fertile ground of reggae, dancehall, funk, soul and beyond.

Chinese-German artist @samgoku has a distinctive take on techno that draws on his own Asian heritage and blends it with contemporary electronics. Across two sublime albums for Atomnation and Permanent Vacation, he has infused his fluid rhythms with gorgeous melodies and ambient haze, traditional Eastern instruments and ethereal moods. This summer, he debuted on the Dekmantel label with four tracks of unconventional techno that marry the physical with the emotional in exceptional style.

There are plenty of similar contrasts in this week's mix, which is an almost two-hour dive into his sound world. It is a deep and compelling blend of supple rhythms that are always subtly shifting. His pristine selections take in dubby and cavernous grooves, tripped-out minimal details and stylish techno cuts that always come with plenty of colour and high-definition designs which lend the whole thing a futurist edge but very human soul.

Following his 2022 ‘That Culture’ album on his Master Chef Music imprint, Brian Johnson unveils his next LP, ‘The Second Company’, which will be released this August. On this next LP, Johnson explores his Techno influences across an eleven-track runtime, including a collaboration with Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) and a remix from long-time collaborator Organic Life.

The title track of the ‘The Second Company’ album sees Brian Johnson utilise arp sequences, punchy drum machines, and an evocative radio-like vocal before continuing the LP with ‘Mortality’, which features cascading keys and sustained pads for a hefty dose of suspense. Johnson’s ‘Sovereignties’ features dark, brooding melodies and a futuristic-yet-dystopian-sounding vocal. It is followed by ‘Find Me’, which has distinct acidic influences over its hard-hitting Techno beat, while in ‘Rare & Beautiful’, Johnson and Yasiin Bey team up for a gorgeous offering with trickling keys and tough drums, complete with Bey’s nostalgia-drenched vocals.

Up next is the roaring 303-infused club cut ‘Spread The Word’, after which Brian Jonhson returns to the Hip Hop influenced, vocal-inflected Techno mutations of ‘The Get Down’ and ‘CA$H’. ‘Son of Sanford’ and ‘Don’t Tempt Me’ continue to delve into the more melodic side of Johnson’s Techno sound with vibrant, psychedelic soundscapes, with Organic Life stepping up for the closer, remixing Brian and Yasiin’s ‘Rare & Beautiful’ into a chilled-out Broken Beat trip.

Born in Toronto to parents of Jamaican descent, Brian Johnson worked his way up the local scene and was soon hosting and headlining parties before running his recording facility. Johnson has since produced, recorded, mixed and mastered thousands of tracks for artists such as Barrington Levy and Drake. His music is a mix of Deep House, Dub and Techno with a new and distinctive edge, a wide array of these influences showcased on the ‘The Second Company’ album.

Brian Johnson's ‘The Second Company’ is another quality addition to his extensive discography. In true Techno spirit, it sounds like a machine-like future rooted in the present, yet yearns for a time long past.

A roaring hour from one of the most vital talents in Naarm: First Nations producer Paul Gorrie, AKA DJ PGZ.

The Gunai/Kurnai and Yorta Yorta artist is a fixture of forward-thinking dance music in Australia, with releases on labels like Butter Sessions, Pure Space and !K7, as well as numerous club and festival gigs on the circuit. An international breakout moment for the Naarm (Melbourne)-based talent feels inevitable.

Having notched up an impressive discography with releases on respected imprints such as Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Dark Entries. Scott runs his own imprint “Posh End Music”, paying homage to his roots with the simple ethos of releasing quality Electronic music. His newly founded outlet “Breakbeat Energy”, which as you can guess by the title, is dedicated to all other forms of music that emanate from the hardcore orientated spectrum. Speedy percussion meets screwface basslines: the Parisian club maestros are in session.

Trying to find one word to describe the music of Amor Satyr and Siu Mata could run you into difficulty. But if we were to try, we'd reach for amphibian: slippery, nimble and evading borders with ease.

With solo and shared releases on labels like SSPB, HARDLINE, TraTraTrax and their own WAJANG, they have evident kinship with what moves contemporary dance floors. The pair are also linked to the rise of an alchemical style they like to call "speed dembow"—taking the looping rhythm of dembow before pitching it up to modern club tempos and adding muscle.

Combining tribal techno, baile funk, dubstep, jungle, dancehall and beyond, their RA Podcast makes for one hell of a ride, with over two hours of romping percussion, lysergic effects, high drama and plenty of wobble.
